Why 500 KB is a comfortable target

At 500 KB a full page scan keeps its small print and a phone photo keeps its detail, so in most cases you cannot tell the compressed copy from the original on screen. Compression at this level mostly removes data your eyes were never going to use. If your form is stricter, the 300 KB and 200 KB versions of this tool work the same way.
